Transportation

Rental Cars – If you are planning to rent a car for the summer, all of the rental agencies recommend reserving vehicles early since they have a limited number available.

Bus, Bike, and Walk – While it's certainly nice to have a car to get around Anchorage (and out of it on the weekends), you can get by without one for the summer. The bus system is reliable and there are lots of bike trails. If you don't bring your bike with you, you can purchase one at a local second-hand store or find one in the want ads/Craigs List. Also, for those living downtown and mid-town, you'll find much within easy walking distance.

Other ideas – If you do decide to drive your car to AK, consider traveling with a fellow intern, friend or family member, since it is a long drive from all locations in the Lower 48.
